2. 248th ACS National Meeting & Exposition Environmental Chemistry Division

Session Title: Water Challenges and Solutions on the Global Scale

Climate change, disproportional distribution, extensive overuse, and anthropogenic contamination of water resources have limited access to clean water for a large portion of the population on this planet. While water treatment and sanitation technologies exist to addresses these challenges many in impoverished communities around the world still do not have sufficient technological know-how, infrastructure, or socially and culturally appropriate technologies to have access to sufficient and affordable potable water. There is an urgent need to develop water treatment and sanitation technologies that can address the potable water needs of these communities, as well as enough clean water for irrigation purposes.

This symposium aims to emphasize the water challenges and solutions that can address the needs of impoverished, remote, and rural regions in both developed and developing countries. The studies covered in this session will include, but are not limited to: (1) water quality and pollution, (2) water treatment technologies and practices, (3) sanitation challenges and issues, (4) water treatment and reuse for food production, (5) energy production vs. water shortage, (6) energy production and water quality, (7) challenges to achieve sustainable water supply, and (8) socially and culturally appropriate water technologies and practices.
