SBQ traz workshop gratuito da American Chemical Society

O ACS Boost ocorrerá em cinco cidades com o objetivo de desenvolver aptidões necessárias ao cientista, que não são ensinadas na graduação

A SBQ irá apoiar uma série de eventos da American Chemical Society que serão realizados no Brasil, em outubro. A série de workshops Boost (Building Opportunities out of Science and Technology) é um curso gratuito, intensivo dirigido para estudantes e jovens químicos, com o objetivo de contribuir para decisões que tornem suas carreiras mais eficientes.

O evento dura um dia e será realizado em Curitiba (UFPR, 3 de outubro), Belo Horizonte (UFMG, 5 de outubro), Salvador (UFBA, dia 7), Recife (Centro de Tecnologias Estratégicas do Nordeste, dia 10) e Manaus (UFAM, dia 14).

São quatro módulos sobre os temas "Comunicando em Ciência", "Publicando em Ciência", "Vendendo sua Ciência" e "Mapeando sua carreira", que serão proferidos por químicos da equipe da ACS: Bradley Miller, Cornelia Bohne, Ellene Tratras Contis, e Lily Raines.

Em Curitiba, a procura foi tanta que esgotaram-se os 100 ingressos iniciais em dois dias. "Convenci a ACS a abrir mais 20 vagas que rapidamente foram preenchidas", afirma a professora Elisa Orth, secretária regional da SBQ UFPR e coordenadora local do Boost. Em sua visão, a procura mostra a importância do evento para a comunidade química local. "Esse workshop vai aprimorar aptidões que o cientista precisa ter para alavancar sua carreira, como saber escrever um projeto de pesquisa, um pedido de financiamento, ou mesmo se comunicar melhor com a sociedade", observa.

Elisa explica que o formato do Boost em Curitiba terá uma mescla dos participantes estrangeiros com especialistas brasileiros. Estarão presentes, o presidente da SBQ, Aldo Zarbin, o presidente da Fundação Araucária (agência de fomento estadual), Paulo Brofman, o pró-reitor de pesquisa e pós-graduação da UFPR, Edilson Sergio Silveira, o diretor do Instituto Senai de Inovação, Luiz Carlos Ferracin, e Luiz Donaduzzi presidente da empresa Prati-Donaduzzi, de medicamentos genéricos.

O evento seguinte será em Belo Horizonte, onde o número de inscritos já é grande e a organização local tenta aumentar o número de vagas disponíveis. Segundo a professora Hállen Callado, secretária regional da SBQ MG, responsável pela organização do Boost em BH, os participantes receberão orientações sobre como potencializar a divulgação e publicação de seus trabalhos. "Está prevista uma seção onde os participantes poderão ouvir relatos de líderes de diferentes seguimentos (governo, academia, empreendedores, pesquisadores renomados) a respeito de suas carreiras, das dificuldades encontradas na transição entre ser um aluno e se tornar um profissional, entre outros temas", explica Hállen. A programação também incluirá 2 horas de atividades práticas direcionadas à preparação de textos, na oficina grantwriting.

What is the main purpose of ACS holding the Boost Program in Brazil?
The purpose of holding the BOOST programs in Brazil is to prepare Brazilian science and engineering students with the skills and knowledge necessary for a successful career. The skills taught in our workshops - communication, publishing, and grant writing - are rarely taught to science and engineering students during their formal coursework, yet are critical for career success. Students and early career scientists also benefit from an exploration of the careers available to them and the skills required for each field. We recognize these needs and hope to help all students and scientists reach their goals. We have hosted successful BOOST workshops in Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, and Peru. We look forward to our programs in Brazil.

The ACS values SBQ as an important partner in the global chemistry enterprise, and hope that our continued collaboration can help scientists from our countries work together and with others to improve the world through chemistry.

What are the expectations in terms of audience and results?
We expect that our audience members will find the training useful. We will ask all attendees to tell us their opinions so we can continue to improve our programs. We invite all attendees to apply for a Trainer Leadership Institute, where approximately 4 students from each BOOST site will be trained in teaching BOOST classes. This way even more scientists can benefit from our program than we can visit directly.

Will the sessions to be held in Brazil deal with all four major topics?
Previously, each guest attended our communication and publishing modules, then chose between our careers module (which is often more useful for undergraduate students) and our grant writing module (which is often more useful for junior faculty and senior students). We are working with our SBQ partners to determine if this schedule is ideal for Brazil, or if it is more appropriate to have each attendees attend all four modules. For instance, we have already determined that our workshop in Curitiba will use our extended schedule. We will finalize our plans in the coming weeks.

What kind of activities will be held during the workshop?
Each module in the workshop will feature presentations from our facilitators and active exercises, and some will feature local subject experts. For example, during the careers module I will present which paths available to scientists, lead attendees through activities to help them determine their current skills and areas that they need to improve, and then scientists with careers in industry, academia, government, and business will share what their job entails and how they acquired their position.

How do you view the cooperation amongst chemists throughout the world?
I think that science, as a whole, is becoming more international and more interdisciplinary, and I think that this only strengthens the scientific enterprise. The more we can improve or skills, including those not formally taught in a laboratory, the better we can work together to solve the challenges facing humanity.
